A Historic Federal Manor House located in Berkeley County, West Virginia
This 1805 historic property has undergone a complete, authentic and meticulous ten year long restoration. The home is listed on the National Register as part of the Tuscarora Creek Historic District and it's rehabilitation was approved by the West Virginia Division of Culture and History and is a "Certified Rehabilitation Project" by the National Park Service. It is located in Berkeley County, West Virginia, 60 miles NW of Washington DC's Dulles International Airport. The home is situated in the center of a 46+ acre parcel which is the headwaters of the Tuscarora Creek. Three spring fed ponds are also on the property, two of which are stocked. North Mountain, the first mountain of the Alleghenies is directly behind the property.
The house was featured in the 2000 Berkeley County Historical Society, House and Garden Tour in it's original unrestored state and again in 2008 as a completed restoration. The house was also on the 2011 Shenandoah-Potomac Garden Council, House and Garden Tour, with over 800 persons touring. |
The 1805 Federal sandstone main house is 44 feet long and 28 feet wide, with 9-1/2 foot ceilings, an unfinished third level and a walk out cellar. The new two story 1840's Greek Revival style addition is 22 by 22 feet with a 22 by 8 foot two story covered porch and was built upon the original foundation dating back to the 1770's.
The main house has a large central hall with a wide open stairway to the second and third level. On the right side of the central hall is the formal parlor and the plantation office, each with a fireplace. On the left side there is a large dining room with a large fireplace and original built in cupboard. The staircase to the cellar is accessed behind the open staircase. To the left of the hall is a very large dining room, with a large fully restored wood burning fireplace. The staircase to the second floor opens to what was the ballroom. A board partition added in the 1840's, when ballrooms were out of vogue, partitioned the ballroom off into a bedroom. During the restoration the partition was moved back to create a space for a bathroom. This bathroom, with an original claw-foot tub, is also connected to the rear bedroom so that the combination can be used as a suite. On the other side of the ballroom is a large master suite, with a restored wood burning fireplace and full bathroom.
The staircase continues up to the third level. The finished stair-head is partitioned off with one door leading to a roughed in bathroom and two additional doors each leading to roughed in bedrooms. These bedrooms have dormer windows which provide legal egress. Heating, air-conditioning, electricity with a 100 amp sub panel, Cat5, and roughed-in plumbing are installed. Also the necessary hardboard to complete the project is also located on this level. The cellar has both inside and outside access.
The new 1840s Greek Revival style addition is entered either through the dining room or the exterior door on the porch. It contains a powder room, large period country kitchen, and pantry / laundry room on the main floor and a master suite, with large walk in closet, on the second floor. Access to the second story porch is off the master suite. There is outside cellar door access to the restored 18th century cellar under the addition. The addition has convenient access to the main structure connecting the kitchen to the dining room, while still being totally private. This was planned so that should the property be used as a bed and breakfast the proprietor could live entirely in the addition. There are also two out buildings near the house, a newer hay shed and an older storage building.
